Brand Heritage - The Body Shop

As an introduction, we could just quote a sentence said by Dame Anita Roddick, a Human Rights activist and founder of The Body Shop: “You’ve got to be hungry – for ideas, to make things happen and to see your vision made into reality.”

1976 - The first store opens on 26th March on the south of England. By 1978, the first overseas franchise opens in Belgium, and by 1982 there are two new stores per month.


1985 - The Body Shop sponsor posters for Greenpeace.

1986 - The Body Shop creates an Environmental Projects Department. The same year, they launch the"Save the Whale" campaign with Greenpeace. This year also sees the first Community Trade product for the brand.

1990 - We can count about 2,500 applications for a franchise, with an always increasing demand for The Body Shop products.
The same year, The Body Shop Foundation is established, a charity which funds human rights and environmental protection groups.


1994 - The Body Shop At Home™ is launched in the UK, then in Canada in 1995, Australia in 1997, and USA in 2001.

1997 - The Body Shop is the first international cosmetics company to sign up to the Humane Cosmetics Standard, supported by leading international animal protection groups.

1998 - For the 50th Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, The Body Shop launches an international campaign with Amnesty International. This successful campaign saw three million people sign up.

2001 - The Body Shop UK head office switches to Ecotricity, providing them with energy from renewable sources. Plus, several The Body Shop® stores are now using green electricity.
This year also saw the first The Body Shop® customer reward program launched in the US ( Love Your Body™).


2006 -  The brand becomes part of the L'Oréal Group. It always have its unique identity and Values and continues to be based in the United Kingdom. It operates independently within the L'Oréal Group and is led by the current management team of The Body Shop reporting directly to the CEO of L'Oréal, Jean-Paul Agon.
